The monks make an offering of this water at Todaijiʼs Nigatsudo Hall. Legend has it that there is an underground connection between Unose and the Wakasai Well in Todaiji. ➋The peninsula turns a light red and makes for a breathtaking contrast with the blue of the sea. ❸The shrine had an important place as the guardian of the whole Hokuriku Road and the foremost shrine of Echizen Province. The large torii gate in front of the precincts ranks as one of the three biggest wooden torii in Japan alongside those of the Kasuga and Itsukushima shrines, and is a national important cultural property. In the northern part of the shrine is a round stone called “Doko-san,” where the main deity of the shrine is believed to have descended. No one is allowed to step on the stone. ❹Kanegasaki Shrine is the site of the Hanakae (Flower-Exchange) Festival, which derives from the legend of lovers who gave sprigs of cherry blossoms to each other to convey their feelings of love. ❺Wakasa Ichinomiya consists of an upper shrine and a lower shrine (the latter is Wakasahime Shrine). It enshrines the deities Yamasachi-hiko and Toyotama-hime. They are venerated as guardians for maritime safety and abundant catches. ➏The Onomai dance is a traditional dance that has been passed on at many shrines in the Tsuruga & Wakasa.
