The sea has a high transparency and offers experience of numerous activities including SUP, diving, and fishing. ➋This scenic district has coastal cliffs with wave-eroded rock that continue for six kilometers, and are the centerpiece of Wakasa Bay Quasi-National Park. You can take a cruise on a boat to see them from a short distance. ❸Meikyodo Cave is the largest of the eight Takahama caves formed through erosion by the sea. It is said that the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu visited it. ❹Held on June 30 in the lunar calendar, which marks the middle of the year and the change of seasons, this is a rite for banishing and cleansing physical and mental “defilement.” ❺This is a ceremony of prayer offered to the deity for a bountiful harvest of the five grains at the time of year when there are many typhoons. It is held at various places. ➏This is one of the fire festivals held around August 23. The participants pray for peace in the home, bountiful harvests of the five grains, and village safety. They attach moji (fire vessels) made of bamboo and straw to long wooden poles, erect them on the river beach, and throw torches into them. It reportedly originated in prayers at Atago Shrine, whose deity is worshipped for prevention of fires.Kehi Shrine Rice-Planting Festival (Tsuruga City)* Held once every seven yearsKehi Shrine Nagoshi Oharai (Tsuruga City)With its many inlets, the coastline creates a diverse scenery. The character for “blue” can be found on many names from ancient times, such as Seikai (Blue Sea) Shrine, which enshrines the tutelary deity of Wakasa and Tango provinces. The blue of Wakasa Bay cleanses the souls of those who gaze at it and puts them in a bright mood.Mid-JulyMid-July22ndLate JulyAugust-SeptemberWakasa Ohi Super Ogase (Ohi Town)1stNagoshi Harai & Hassaku Kito Festival (Ohi Town)Obon FestivalShoraibune-Okuri (Mihama Town, Obama City)19th20thLate AugustKazai Noh (Wakasa Town)Kazai Noh (Mihama Town)Matsuage Festival (Obama City & Ohi Town)SummerSummer
