Because no major battles were fought there, it still has old temples and Buddhist statues from olden times. Some of them have been designated as national treasures and important cultural properties. ➋The Buddhist statues of Wakasa were created under the influence of those in Nara and Kyoto, and still survive today. They are numerous and of diverse types. Their appearance bespeaks their long history. ❸The festival has the participation of 24 neighborhoods. It is held in 12 neighborhoods one year and the other 12 in the next. Besides omikoshi (portable shrines), it features four types of performances: dashi (floats) (with musical accompaniment), kagura dancing (with taiko drumming), bofuri-taiko (stick-swinging drumming), and sanbiki shishimai (three-lion dancing). This is the biggest autumn festival in the Wakasa area. ❹Called the “Kehi Long Festival,” this festival lasts for two weeks. Participants pull six floats and carry portable shrines around the districts whose residents are parishioners of the shrine. ❺The Ofuna Asobi Kangen Festival derives from the story about a prince of the Southern Court who boarded a boat on Tsuruga Bay with a company of musicians to admire the autumn colors and evening moon. ➏Terraced rice fields stretch out along the coast of Wakasa Bay, and make for a beautiful contrast with the sea.
