Called the Saba Kaido, or “Mackerel Road,” the latter routes were instrumental in the transmission and development of the arts and culture, and are still in service today. ➋The village of Natasho was where a dojo training hall was opened by the Tsuchimikado family, who were descendants of the onmyo master Abe no Seimei. Ceremonies are still conducted there today. ❸The Buddhist nun Happyakubikuni gained eternal youth by eating the flesh of a “human-fish.” This legend spread nationwide in different forms. It is thought to have originated in Obama. In the vicinity, there are several statues of Happyakubikuni and spots connected with her. ❹In this rite, men jump into the cold waters in mid-winter and pray for bountiful catches and harvests while tugging a rope made of straw. Standing at both ends of the thick rope, they tug at it with their chilled hands and see if their side can pull it apart faster than the other side. ❺Wakasa was a mitsuke province that provided foodstuffs to the imperial court beginning in the Asuka and Nara periods. The abundance of various foods were transported to the capital and supported the dietary culture there. Even today, people in the Kansai region treasure food items from the Wakasa area. ➏On the bottom of Lake Suigetsu, one of the Mikata Five Lakes, are layers of dead plankton, pollen, and yellow sand, one on top of the other. At present, these layers represent sedimentation over a period of 70,000 years, and provide clues to knowledge of the natural environment in different years.
